Take for example Romans 15:22 where Paul is telling the church in Rome why he's been unable to visit them, "For this reason I also have been much hindered from coming to you." Paul has been much hindered.
Now much can either mean often, as in things are always standing in my way, or it can mean large, as in, big things have stood in his way. I like it that way, even if I still think ESV does a nice job cleaning it up for our sake.
