It has at last become clear to me that I was once trading on a very mistaken assumption when working through Romans chapter 2- I was mistaking Jewish categories for the Westminster notion of "Covenant of Works" and "Covenant of Grace." I was reading the chapter as proof that all men are still under an original covenant of perfection, and will be saved if they keep the law rightly, and Paul was here holding out this promise again.
Now I realize how I was mistaken- Paul isn't going on about an original agreement, he's talking to the Jews and throwing their failure to keep the laws of Sinai in their face. He's going back to the law of Moses and reminding them that "those who do these things shall live by them."
He's showing them their lack of perfection. He's telling them that although they were given the law their sins merit only judgment now. The law promised righteousness if one could keep it, but it turns out that was an impossibility. That's the essence of Romans 2. It's a reminder to the Jews about their covenant at Sinai.
I hang my head in shame I didn't realize this earlier.

A diverse list
A friend of a friend named Matt Rose who is a preacher and an Anglophile is helping me to polish my book before I release it.
I was about to list his name in the special thanks at the end of the book when it occurred to me - I have a very wild and eclectic list of people in there.
I have Alicia Carter, who attends a Church of Christ in Sacramento. There is the aforementioned Matt who is sort of a Baptist, but really more of an Emergent Evangelical from Missouri. There is John McAurthur, a dispensationalist fundamentalist from Southern California, Alistar Begg, a Reformed Baptist from Akron Ohio, Reddit Andrews III a Presbyterian from Jacksonville. The others are dead Europeans, generally continentals, except for Stott who was an Englishman.
All of them have in some way helped me, and to them I'm grateful. But what a list. What a weird and wild list of all kinds of Christians. I couldn't have put together a more diverse list if I had tried.

Moses didn't look
We make much of when Moses asked to see the face of God and He told him no. But look at this:
Exodus 3:6 "Moreover he said, I [am] the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God."
In the first case Moses would not look at God. It's therefore so much bigger a moment when he is able to ask God to show him His glory. Over the course of his experiences Moses was moved to a place where he could trust God enough not to destroy him for his sinfulness. He came to terms with the goodness and mercy of God. First he did not, then much later after seeing who God was, he asked. Like Peter who begged for Jesus to go away, and then turns and confesses He is the Christ, the son of the living God.

Buying all men - Old Testament style
Hosea 7:13-16 - “Woe to them for they have fled from Me,
destruction to them because they have transgressed against Me! Though I have
redeemed them, yet they have spoken lies against Me, and they have not cried to
Me with their heart when they howled upon their beds; they assemble themselves
for corn and wine, and they rebel against Me. Though I have bound and
strengthened their arms, yet do they imagine mischief against Me. They return,
but not to the most High- they are like a deceitful bow, their princes shall
fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue, this will be their derision in
the land of Egypt.”
Behold this little gem, a quote from Hosea stating that Israel, though bought and redeemed by God, would utterly perish in exile for their sins, because although they were redeemed, yet they still turned and rejected God.
Show me the hyper-Calvinists now! Let them come and say this is a quote from Deuteronomy 31! Let them tell me that this is referring to those who said God had bought them, rather than being a direct quote from the Lord Almighty. State your case that you may be proved right! Come and tell me Christ doesn't buy men He destroys in the NT when He does it in the Old. Read em and weep boys, all aces.
