Punishment that fits the crime

Why did God punish Adam so severely in the garden for such a small thing? That is the wrong way to think about it, God demands perfect obedience, and any deviation from this should be punished. When you tell your children not to stab each other with a knife you expect them to obey you. When you tell them to refill the dogs water bowl and they defy you its the same principle at work, they are guilty of selfishness and wanting to do their own thing. They are exposing their inner thoughts and heart to you, and at that moment you get a clear insight into how they feel about you. Their deed is almost irrelevant at that point because with that attitude they will just find other ways to express their feelings. God is therefore just in punishing disobedience no matter how small.
